Together for God's Glory

After the deep and meaningful celebration of Easter, our eyes turn toward the spring and summer. For the spring, we have chosen the Book of Exodus to guide our journey together. What a great book! What a great story!   In the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Exodus is called, “These are the Names” – derived from the opening statement in Hebrew, “These are the names of the sons of Israel (אֵלֶּה שְׁמֹות בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל).Our English translations use the name Exodus – taken from the Latin Vulgate, Exodos Aigyptou – “Going Out from Egypt.” The Latin title is derived from the Greek word, exodos - ἔξοδος – “the way out.” It would be difficult to exaggerate the impact of this historical event when we consider the theological formation of Israel. Creation, Exodus, Exile --- these three stories/events/experiences shaped Israel’s understanding of its identity and reality itself. The God of the Old Testament is the God of creation. He is the God of redemption. He is the God of restoration. These theological convictions are grounded in historical realities for the people of Israel (obviously, the Church will be theologically and spiritually formed by these same historical events as well!).   The Book of Exodus stands as a tall tower in the Old Testament collection. The story of God’s deliverance captured the hearts and minds of Hebrew theologians, poets, and prophets. This story will be told and re-told throughout the ages. It was one example in history of God’s power, His presence, His plan, and His perspective on display for all to see. It’s an incredible story!   So much happens in this story. The family of Jacob flourishes and grows within the protective borders of Egypt. We meet Moses, one of the most influential men in all of human history. God Almighty reveals His covenant Name. God’s power is on display through the miraculous rescue of His people. The plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, the Ten Commandments, the Pillar of Cloud/Fire, the Glory of God, the Tabernacle, the priesthood, the Covenant --- wow! So much!   On Sunday mornings, we will focus on some practical lessons we can learn from this majestic book. For further study and a deeper analysis – anyone can join us for the Pastor’s Bible Study on Wednesdays (or watch the videos later), since I am leading a study of Exodus.   Our “Together in Word” texts will be taken from the Book of Exodus as well as various New Testament references. We will seek to highlight the lessons learned on Sunday morning as we focus on these texts.   I will do my best to capture the big picture of the Exodus narrative as we pause for the practical lessons each week. This will be a challenging exercise because the Book of Exodus is so long and filled with so many significant stories. However, I will trust that there is enough general familiarity with these stories that this plan will accomplish my intent.
