Just Add Water

Now that the school year is in full swing, you may deal with the occasional reality of feeling overwhelmed. There are SO many things to get involved with, so on top of demanding schoolwork, you may be juggling sports, theater, music, or jobs, while also trying to stay connected to your friends, family, and church… and get enough sleep! Sometimes you have so much to do that you don’t know where to even start. It’s analysis paralysis!

One of my favorite ways to handle that feeling of overwhelm is to just add water.

  • Run a long, steamy shower. Use a hair mask or add eucalyptus to help you slow down and relax.
  • Draw a bath. Add your favorites- a bath bomb, bubbles, oils- whatever you prefer! You can light a candle or diffuse your favorite scent. Grab a fluffy towel and a book.
  • Do you have a swimming pool or hot tub? Carve out a few minutes to take a dip. Float, swim laps, or watch the sun set from the side.

Will an hour in the water fix those issues you’re facing? Of course not. However, it’s a great first step to help you regulate your stress and emotions so that you can be in a better place to tackle what’s next.

You can spend this intentional time focusing on taking deep calming breaths, praying through all that’s before you, or repeating your favorite worship songs back to God. Try this prayer activity. Imagine yourself seated at a table with Jesus, with your plate overflowing with all of the things that worry you. One by one, name each thing that you have, and imagine physically giving it to Jesus. It’s on his plate now. At the end of your prayer, your plate is empty, and Jesus has it all. He is not burdened by you. His arms are open to lift the weight off of your shoulders.

I love the way the Amplified translation says it in 1 Peter 5:7. “Casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].”

We are praying for you as you work to honor God in all you do. You bear the image of an incredible God, made on purpose with purpose, a light in the darkness around you!
