Baby Boomer Fact: At its height, the “baby boom” babies came into the world at the rate of one every 8 seconds… 10,000 babies every day! From 1946-1964, 92% of all women who could have children did so – and they averaged almost 4 children each!
Boomer Moment: What would you consider the “defining” moment of the Boomer Generation? Water Gate? Woodstock? Viet Nam? According to the leading experts, it was the JFK assassination… November 22, 1963. His death first shocked, then mesmerized the nation. When Kennedy was assassinated, everyone stopped to watch CBS or NBC’s extraordinary first-ever-on-the-scene coverage. At 12:30 (our time), CBS interrupted “As the World Turns” with Walter Cronkite announcing that “shots have been fired at President Kennedy’s motorcade in Dallas, Texas.” It would be at 1:38 p.m. that he would return to the air to announce that JFK had died in a Dallas hospital. No other news story in history had been transmitted so quickly. In less than two hours, more than 90% of Americans knew of his death. This single event changed more, almost immediately, than any other event to define the boomer culture.
